True Autumn

Also called Warm Autumn.

True Autumn is the heart of the warm seasons. It suits golden, earthy coloring — auburn, copper, or golden-brown hair, warm-toned skin from fair and freckled to golden or deep, and eyes in ambers, warm greens, and browns. If goldenrod, rust, and olive make you glow while cool pinks and blue-reds turn you sallow, you have found your palette.

Every shade here is warm. Rust, brick red, goldenrod, olive green, and warm coral are rich but never shrill, saturated the way turned leaves are. Nothing icy or gray-based makes it in.

True Autumn’s sister seasons frame it in depth and softness: Dark Autumn takes these colors deeper and more shadowed, and Soft Autumn gently mutes them. If the full palette feels slightly loud on you, Soft Autumn is usually the answer.

Build the wardrobe on chocolate, coffee brown, cream, and warm beige. Brown is to True Autumn what black is to the winters: the dark that makes everything else glow.

One golden color on one earthy neutral is the season’s easiest outfit: rust with cream, or goldenrod against coffee brown.

Skip pure black and cool pink; both drain the gold from this coloring. Reach for warm burgundy and olive green when you want depth instead.
