Dark Winter
Also called Deep Winter.
Dark Winter suits deep, cool-leaning coloring: dark hair, eyes in near-black, brown, or deep hazel, and skin from fair to deep. Strong, shadowed color flatters this coloring most. If black feels like home and light pastels wash you out, you are probably somewhere in this season.
Next to Bright Winter, everything here is richer and quieter: saturated but shaded, never dusty. Forest green, deep crimson, aubergine, and sapphire sit against true black and battleship grey, with a few icy accents for contrast.
Dark Winter borders the autumn family, which is why its espresso brown and a few of its deeper reds feel almost warm. Its sister seasons are True Winter, one step cooler and icier, and Dark Autumn, one step warmer and earthier. Many people with deep coloring sit between the two.
The palette
Wearing it
Build on true black, espresso brown, and battleship grey. Dark Winter is one of the few seasons that wears black well, so use it as the backbone and keep the light neutrals for accents.
An easy outfit is one deep jewel color on a dark base: sapphire with true black, or deep crimson with espresso brown.
Skip camel, orange, and golden browns; they pull warmth this palette does not have. Reach for deep crimson and forest green when you want richness with the right cool cast.
Sister seasons: True Winter and Dark Autumn.
